USA Pickleball compiles comments and identifies rules-interpretation issues and then revises the rules on a yearly basis.  It's that time of year again, when tournament players and referees need to familiarize themselves with these changes and understand the new rules.

A new Rules Change document for 2021 has been published and is available for download.

Here is just a couple of the new rules changes:

    • A serve that hits the net and lands in bound is now in-play. No such thing as a let serve.
    • A drop-serve is now legal.
    • A ball should not be called out, unless you can see court surface between the ball and the line.

In addition, USA Pickleball has published a new document to make it easier for non-tournament players to read and understand the rules. It's called the Alternate Rulebook.

As we all know, there are lots of rules to follow when we play pickleball.

And there are rumors of new rules coming out in January 2021.

However, there's one unwritten rule that is the most important rule to follow in 2020 and beyond.

    What rule is that?

    THE GOLDEN RULE!

The Golden Rule is the principle of treating others as you want to be treated.

Because we are living in a pandemic, it's even more important to treat others as you would want to be treated.

TELL YOUR PLAYING PARTNERS IMMEDIATELY IF

    • you have been recently exposed to COVID19,
    • you have recently been tested for COVID19 and are waiting for results, or
    • you have tested positive.

Until recently, I would have thought that this was a no-brainer.

But I know that I am not alone in knowing that there are some pickleball players not playing by the Golden Rule.

Please follow the Golden Rule and let others know what your COVID19 status is. And if you're like me, start asking others their COVID19 status before you set up pickleball play dates.

Please take care of yourselves and your pickling buddies,

    Kathy Getto

Meridian Homecourt is closed until further notice.

At this time, it appears Mettle Sports and ETC are still open, but we are unsure of any new limitations, given the current spike in coronavirus cases in Idaho and the Treasure Valley.

    Please stay safe.

    Pickleball anyone?

The City of Boise dedicated on Thursday a brand new outdoor pickleball and tennis complex at Hobble Creek Park in west Boise.

“Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and for good reason. It’s easy to learn and easy for people of all ages and abilities to play. The completion of this complex is a testament to our residents’ passion for the sport here in Boise,” said Mayor Lauren McLean.

Hobble Creek Park covers 21 acres and the new pickleball complex is located in the northeast corner adjacent to the park’s playground. The newly dedicated pickleball and tennis courts are fully fenced and lined. Additional amenities added at the park include bleachers for the two championship pickleball courts, a donor brick plaza, a drinking fountain, additional seating areas, bike racks, and a flagpole.

Late last month, BAPA's own Susannah Bar earned the Point of the Day award from Pickleball Channel.

This point during the bronze medal match between Robb Cassidy & Susannah Barr vs Irina Tereschenko & Riley Newmas was so surprising as we watched it happen live, that we had do share it with everyone. It has everything: diving, scrambling, no-look shots, poaching, covering ernes, cross-court action, and more. (From Pickleball Channel)

Watch the Point of the Day!

You can also watch the entire bronze medal match on the Pickleball Channel.

In this bronze medal match, Susannah Barr & Rob Cassidy try their luck out against pickleball veterans Irina Tereschenko & Riley Newman.  Only one team can make it to the gold medal match and you can be sure that it will take more than just luck to walk away with a win.
